What to Look for in Gifts for 5 Year Old Boys
Physical Development
Five-year old boys are starting to get better control of their bodies. Children start learning how to work their smaller muscles in their hands and fingers, in addition to the larger muscles in their limbs. It’s around this age that they’ll be learning to write and draw. His hand-eye coordination is also going to start improving, especially with practice.
Toys that encourage physical development are those that might help him get active, like outdoor toys. It’s also helpful to work the smaller muscle groups. Playing with Play-Doh, making the pinching motion to pick up small cars, and similar activities are great for strengthening these skills. We recommended several toys for physical development above.
Social and Emotional Development
While five-year old boys may like to play on their own, they may also enjoy playing with others. Playing with others is great for increasing his ability to collaborate and work with others. However, his alone time also helps encourage his own creativity and foster independence.
Another benefit of this age is that children are grasping the difference between right and wrong more easily. They are better able to play with others and might practice early conflict resolution. They are also eager to please (parents and friends) and are more likely to follow the rules. It’s also the perfect age for playing pretend, so 5-year old boys should have toys that encourage this, too.
Educational Development
Cognitively, five-year olds are still grasping early problem-solving skills. It’s important to encourage them to tackle activities that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving. This is also a great time to start introducing STEM principles, especially in today’s technology-driven world. Many fields requiring principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are in-demand and these skills have real-world application.
Five-year olds are also grasping better control of early language and may even be able to recognize some words. Some also read at this age. Books and magazine encourage reading and early language skills, as do board games.
